Felicity the Greyhound

Aug 15

Day two doldrums.  They suck, just saying.  Felicity and I had a good night sleep last night (on a single mattress by the fire while poor Dad slept alone yet again) but upon waking she had the doldrums.  They lasted all day.  Our diligence to pain relief timings has paid off – she seems to be in less pain, which is a milestone for us considering the last day and night of heart wrenching screaming.  Along with doldrums comes a lack of eating.  After trying jam sandwiches, cheese, dog roll and Auntie’s special cookies – cheese sausages finally won the battle for us.  I made a trip to town to purchase a BBQ chicken and frankfurters for her which also seems to be working.

Felicity is exhausted.  I am exhausted.  Dad is now the trooper – he continues to be awesome in every way and we love him for it.  Still, we are all ok and continue to look positively forward.  There is no other way.  We celebrate the milestone’s of almost a full night sleep last night, laying in the sunshine today and the first poo.  Yes, you read that correctly – the first POO!  As each of you will absolutely understand, the small things in life right now, matter the most.  Felicity continues to teach me this, even in her current pain.  She is extraordinary.

I will sign off now but before I go – I really want to express my sincerest thanks to the Tripawds community for their ongoing support, encouragement and words of love and blessings.  You have made our journey so much easier, even though most of you are oceans away from us.  I have only just figured out how to reply to your comments on our blog and when I have a bit more energy, I will reply personally to each of you.  It makes us feel so warm in the dark of the night when things aren’t great, that we have you here with us.  Our deepest heartfelt thanks.  Cate & Felicity

We can’t not send you some photo’s from our day – until next time,

undeniably scrawled by a very tired Tripawd Mom, Cate xx

It will get better! I spent 2 weeks sleeping on a mattress on the floor with Pete so he wouldn’t take out his staples. I know the excitement of the 1st poop!LOL
Pete’s 9 years old and has been a tri-pawd for 5 months! He’s getting around like a champ! Those sleepless nights will turn into beautiful days with felicity! ♡

You darn right it’s okay to have the doldrums right now! Felicity just had MAJOR SURGERY and is just starting her recovery process. Plus, it appears the pain meds are helping and they will keep her a little lethargic.

Her appetite will be off a bit too, but it sounds like you are finding some “meals” too enticing to turn down! YAY!!!

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR POO!!!! HAPPY POO DANCE GOING ON OVER HERE 🙂 🙂 🙂

Felicity is such a beautiful girl. Those gentle eyes, that sweet face…such a special girl.

Recovery is hard, no doubt about it. Trying to be patient while you see your dog hurting and in the “doldrums” is a pretty daunting task. But slowly….ever so slowly….you’ll see a tiny bit of her sparkle come back. Perhaps it will start with a feeble tail wag one day. A few days later she may actually bark at a squirrel. Eventually , you’ll be in the kitchen and turn around and there is Felicity standing at your side waiting for you to give her a treat.

Patience…”hurry up and give it to me now!”

And goodness gracious don’t worry about replying…you have plenty on your plate to deal with! Just be with your Felicity and rest when you can!

Looking forward to more great updates AND some more of those wonderful pictures!

    Love!

It sounds as if her recovery is ” normal” so far, it’s good to stay in top of the pain. And like Sally said, right now rest really is the best thing for her, so try not to be discouraged with her “doldrums”. Also remember the pain meds could be contributing to her lack of appetite. She really does look fabulous for what she’s been through! One day at a time, one step at a time….

Felicity is doing amazing! Yes, the first 2 weeks are exhausting! Get all the sleep that you can. Don’t worry too much about food the first few days as the pain meds can mess with the appetite. Hand feeding tends to work great for greyhounds. Just take a handful of her normal kibble and try hand feeding her. Don’t put it in her bowl, just grab a handful and go to her with it OR use one of your bowls/mugs to put her food in. Just the novelty of the human feeding food by hand from a human dish can win over a greyhound. Nixon loved kibble with cottage cheese and just wanted to eat in his bed all the time.

Thank you SO much for sharing the milestone moments with us. You are not alone, we are ALL here with you and for you. May you continue to be strengthened and encouraged by the amazingness of your baby. Animals are truly resilient, humans can learn many things from them.

    Love and Hugs,

Glad to hear things are progressing well. You all have an amazing attitude. It’s not easy but you’re doing it, so hang in there, you’re almost home-free!
